Video and Print Empty
PostSubject: Video and Print   Video and Print EmptyFri Jun 29, 2007 5:52 pm

I'm an avid connoisseur of both print and video. I adore combination or blurring of the two, so I won’t say that I’m not biased… But can’t we all just get along?

I’ve encountered a lot of hostility from print journalists who worried that I was stealing their story the moment I pulled out a video camera. It just isn’t true! Multimedia should add to the print experience, not erase it. Some stories are well suited to video or interactive media… but most, I feel, are best printed and probably will be for the foreseeable future.

A useful article on Poynter discusses several tips that print could take from video, from pacing to form.

You hear it over and over again from multimedia journalists: "We're not TV and we don't want to be." I believe that deeply. On the other hand, as a recovering television photographer, I believe the skills I spent 13 years learning have a relevance to the work I do now as a multimedia photographer and producer. As I try to understand the overlap, I decided to ask for help: I contacted four television editors whose work I respect, asked them to look at audio slideshows produced by news organizations and tell me what principles of video editing might be applied to improve the storytelling.
